Animal-Friendly SPF

Updated: Sep 18, 2020

I love my dog and my cat, of course. My love and appreciation for her have grown my love and affection for animals of all kinds.

Since my dog takes walks with me outside, she even gets some physical blocking SPF on her nose and ears; yes, animals can get skin cancer, too.

Sunscreen is considered an over the counter product. Unlike cosmetics, OTC products are subject to being tested on animals at the discretion of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, a company can waive this if the ingredient has already been tested and is already on the market. The good news is, the vast majority of sunscreen ingredients have been around for a long time; therefore, no need to test on animals. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, to test the effectiveness of SPF, it is tested on paid volunteers.

Diva Tip: Chemical and Physical Sunscreens exist and are two different types of topical sunscreen potions available. A Chemical formulation must be applied at least 30 minutes before sun exposure, whereas physical can be applied immediately prior! Reapply both every 1-2 hours.
