Is Probiotic Skincare a Trick or Treat?

By Renata Block, MMS, PA-C

As you all know, I get a plethora of skincare products sent to me. Earlier this year, I tried out Sebamed products and liked them very much except for some of the added fragrance in a few of their products (my personal opinion). The unscented body wash and moisturizer are a huge hit with my patients thus far, and my husband loves the facial cream with the fragrance; he doesn’t even notice it. Since I last shared my experience, Sebamed came out with a special anti-aging product line that includes probiotic skincare, so I got to play with those for the past few months.

First of all, let’s recap Sebamed. They are an innovative company that focuses on product pH. Established in 1967, they were definitely ahead of their time because the hot topic between derm colleagues today is skin and pH. For the skin to maintain a healthy shield from the outside world, the skin has a naturally acidic pH for homeostasis. Many skincare products offer an alkaline pH, which can then disrupt our natural pH mojo. When that balance is disrupted with such diagnoses such as eczema, dry skin, and other ailments, the skin can experience severe flares of such conditions.

The other hot topic is probiotic skincare and how it can help benefit your overall complexion. Probiotics, think yogurt or kombucha, in general, help balance the flora that actively lives on our skin, in our gut. If we have an imbalance of the normal bacteria, this can lead to inflammation, imbalance in our gastrointestinal system, and even our skin. Normal flora is important to protect us from the “bad” microorganisms that can wreak havoc on our systems. Enter Sebamed Pro with probiotics to calm the skin from inflammation, slow down premature aging, and give the normal flora an optimal environment to fight off acne-causing bacteria such as Cutibacterium acnes. Acne might not even have a chance against these products. At least we hope!

In the end, I always teach my patients it is better to be proactive than reactive with your skin concerns, and using products like SebaMed has a nice line of cleansers, moisturizers, and anti-aging products to choose from whether you want them with probiotics or not.

Scienced-based skincare solutions are at the top of my list and to share this brand with my followers is an honor. Visit my Amazon Store to purchase your Sebamed today!
