Dear Savvy Derm Diva,
What is the best way to treat melasma?
Frustrated With Discoloration, Meg R.
Dear Frustrated With Discoloration,
Hands down, it is sunscreen! If you don’t have the basics of sunscreen etiquette, don’t even waste your money trying to treat it. Keep in mind that if you see “light,” it’s reflected light, which is exposure to
Action spectrum in the UVB, UVA, Blue, HEV & IR spectrum (the light responsible for photosynthesis) can cause damage to the skin along with discoloration. Again, sunscreen plays a vital role in protecting the skin against light exposure; however, even more important is to have your discoloration evaluated by a Board-Certified Dermatologist to determine the “depth” of discoloration as therapy can depend on that! Also, be careful with OTC treatments such as 2% hydroquinone. It has been linked to a permanent discoloration known as “Exogenous Ochronosis,” which can happen in all skin types, especially in darker skin complexions.
Diva Tip: The best sun protection is one with Zinc Oxide as it reflects light from the skin and helps prevent it from being absorbed into the skin. Use Code: DERMDIVA for free shipping!
Dear Savvy Derm Diva,
What is the difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin? I am not sure which I am suffering with. Please help!
Feeling Flaky, Amanda S.
Dear Feeling Flaky,
You should keep in mind your skin history, as dry skin is genetically related. It generally lacks oil and is prone to other skin conditions such as eczema. As a result, the skin can look dull, feel tight and be flaky.
Add products to your skin routine, such as Hyaluronic Acid, before your moisturizer is an important step. You may also consider essential fatty acids supplements such as Fish oil. As far as dehydrated skin goes, it is a temporary condition that lacks water within the skin. Typically, it is caused by using the wrong skin care products and environmental shifts. It can also be a result of hormones. This skin will feel tight and have an unusual shininess to it. You can feel symptoms of burning and experience feeling oily and dry synergistically.
